Mar. 18--Boeing, the Chicago-based aviation giant with Northwest roots, is building a plastic, snap-together plane -- the Dreamliner -- in what may be the most international manufacturing project in history.
The Boeing 787 venture is bolstering Oregon's slowing manufacturing industry, providing hundreds of jobs to engineers, assembly-line workers and pilots.
In Gresham, employees are machining parts to keep the wings on the Dreamliner. In Portland, workers are casting engine components that will help the jet fly farther and quieter with fewer emissions. In McMinnville, managers are assigning pilots to fly mammoth cargo jets ...
