The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the business equivalent of the Academy Award or the Pulitzer Prize. Named for the Reagan-era Secretary of Commerce who died in 1987, the Award is part of a national campaign to improve the quality of products and services in the United States. It promotes awareness about the importance of Total Quality Management (TQM) and recognizes quality achievements of U.S. companies. The aim of the Baldrige Award is to encourage companies (1) to emphasize quality so they can compete more effectively in the global market and (2) to share successful strategies on quality.
