"Jews and Gentiles" by Milton Himmelfarb (Encounter Books, 273 pages, $25.95)
Milton Himmelfarb was, for a number of years, a contributing editor for Commentary magazine. His sister, Gertrude Himmelfarb, has selected 16 of his essays _ he wrote many more _ for this collection. They range from 1949's "The Vindictive and the Merciful: God of Wrath and God of Love" to "What Do I Believe?" his last major essay, written in 1996.
Topics range from "No Hitler, No Holocaust" to "Never Again!" to "Church and State: How High a Wall?" with stops along the way for Spinoza, Moses Mendelssohn, modernity, Episcopalians and Puerto Ricans.
