Certain software titles, such as Microsoft Office, seem to be ubiquitous for no particular reason. Whereas most of us use Word to write letters and draft invoices, or Excel to track finances, most rarely touch the other included programs. Moreover, there are many other tools that can be used to create a basic letter or spreadsheet without the expense of buying a complete office suite.

Compatibility is one reason. Anyone writing a document on a home computer might want to send that document to a work colleague, so they need to be certain that the document is compatible with Microsoft Word.
