Mar. 20--Year in and year out, black students in Cumberland County, the state and the nation score significantly lower on achievement tests than white students.

"It's everybody's dirty little secret," said Rene Corders, principal at E.E. Smith High School. "Nobody wants to talk about the achievement gap."

If poor, black students consistently score lower than whites, then it stands to reason that E.E. Smith and Westover high schools will have a tough time meeting state-imposed proficiency levels.

At E.E. Smith, 86 percent of students are black. At Westover, black students make up 71 percent of the student body. More ...
