Doug Caves hadn't run an outdoor race since his senior year at Oxford High - a span of almost two years - but one 400-meter dash into his outdoor career at UMass-Lowell, and Caves is a record-setter.
At last weekend's UNC-Charlotte 49er Track & Field Classic, a non-scoring meet with schools from all three divisions, the redshirt freshman won the 400 in 47.46 seconds to break the previous school record of 47.54 seconds set in 1976. Caves, who won Friday's preliminary in 47.62, the third-fastest time in UML history, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship.
And he did all this with a broken baby toe on his left ...
