One of the impressions the music industry, its consultants and critics gave at last week's Digital Music Forum East had to do with the amount of revenue the industry generates. The phrase that was often repeated was, "People are listening to more music than ever but paying less for it than ever."
One sign that an industry has peaked, and is perhaps declining, is when it starts consolidating for the purpose of reducing operating expenses. Since the birth of the original Napster, the major labels have gone from five to four--when Sony and Bertelsmann merged their music operations--and possibly three if Warner Music completes its proposed acquisition of EMI.
