In 1989-90, AS A JUNIOR in college, I enjoyed a one-year respite from dorm life, living in a rundown house in town with four other women, all feminists. Two, like me, were also lesbians. Most of the time we were too busy reading, writing papers, editing the campus feminist newspaper, playing soccer or working part-time jobs to spend much time together. And money was so tight that each of us kept her own private store of food: God forbid you should touch someone else's milk when she might be on her last dollar, or buy household groceries and expect someone else to contribute who might be broke.
But once in a while we managed to have a house dinner. Everyone ...
