Over the course of this century, operatic performance has undergone considerable change. Whether or not the change has been for the better depends on one's point of view. In her introduction to Diva, entitled "Opera Today," Helena Matheopoulos summarizes these changes, and correctly identifies many of the reasons for the decline in the vocal art that has left operatic singing in its current dismal state. Today, the dramatic aspects of operatic performance have taken precedence, at the expense of proper vocal production.
