Considering that this was an issue thought to be a top priority a few weeks ago, early childhood education isn't getting much respect.
House DFLers Tuesday announced a bill that would allocate $40 million in new money over the next two years for programs such as Early Childhood Family Education, school readiness and Head Start programs, and training programs for early childhood and pre-school teachers.
That's a far cry from the $100 million to $150 million that Rep. Nora Slawik, DFL-Maplewood, said is needed to fund early childhood programs, including early child care, adequately.
