Mar. 22--PHILADELPHIA -- One can't get much lower than Caroline Thibodeaux, a black maid in 1963 Louisiana. She spends most of her day washing, ironing and folding the laundry of the Jewish family for whom she works in possibly the only basement in a state that lies 16 feet under sea level.

Caroline is low for other reasons as well. The soul-wrenching heartache and suppressed fury that rages within her permeate the space she occupies, affecting all those who dare to enter. More than one character ponders if "that woman ever smiles."

Nevertheless, she has formed a bond, of sorts, with Noah, the sad little boy who lives ...
