The great-granddaughter of a slave brought to South Carolina from Virginia, Parnell Mines Jones was a persistent advocate for equal opportunity even as a teenager. She was active in her high school Student Council NAACP group and traveled to Philadelphia by train for a meeting. One of her fondest memories was attending an NAACP convention at which Eleanor Roosevelt was the keynote speaker.
Born in Savannah during 1925, Parnell Mimes enjoyed a modest, yet comfortable lifestyle with her younger sister and two older brothers. Her father was a carpenter and church deacon, her mother a homemaker. Parnell's godmother was a school nurse, and many of her neighbors were ...
