CD-R, Compact Disc-Recordable, is a technology that allows anyone with appropriate equipment and software to create a disc at their desk that can be read on any standard CD-ROM drive. No longer must would-be CD publishers deal with a far-off mastering facility before seeing their disc in its final form. Projects can be prototyped and fully evaluated before committing to mass replication. Organizations in which privacy or other security issues are paramount can create, package and make multiple copies of sensitive information totally in-house.
