Tilapia ranked No. 6 on the National Fisheries Institute's 2005 Top 10 list of U.S. seafood consumption by species, at 0.85 pounds per capita, up from 0.69 pounds per capita in 2004.
Despite a competitive field--five of the 10 most popular species are whitefish, according to NFI--don't be surprised to see tilapia take over the No. 5 spot from catfish (1.03 pounds per capita), which has held that position since 1998, as soon as next year. Not bad for a species that first made the Top 10 list in 2001.
While domestic catfish processing fell by 6 percent in 2006, tilapia imports increased by 17 percent, to a total of 348.8 million pounds. The big increase ...
