During the 1800s, the Ohio & Erie Canal breathed life into the towns created along its banks. Today, the canal is serving the same purpose -- it's revitalizing the economy of Akron and other cities it once spawned.
History is repeating itself as the movement to turn the remnants of the canal into a National Heritage Corridor has launched an economic revival. Retail shops, new housing, industry, recreational activities and entertainment spots are popping up along the canal path.
In downtown Akron, businesses are gravitating to the canal in the same way they seek the waterfront in other metropolitan areas.
