HE is the cute, fluffy white fur ball whose uncertain future seems to symbolise the fate of his entire species.
When polar bear cub Knut, born in Berlin Zoo in December, was abandoned by his mother some suggested he should be put down rather than be raised by humans.
Animal lovers protested and the baby bear was saved. But his case has highlighted the desperate plight of captive and wild polar bears.
