Germany has launched its 1995 stamp program with five commemoratives, including a single stamp on the 500th anniversary of the Diet of Worms.
The imperial diet, or legislative assembly, was convened in 1495 by Maximilian I to enact reforms in the administration of the Holy Roman Empire. The diet also introduced the first general tax of the empire, which became the foundation of the current German tax system.
Other diets were also held at Worms, including the famous assembly in 1521 at which Reformation leader Martin Luther refused to recant his religious views.
