Like everyone else, I learned about Truman Capote when his controversial, erotically suggestive photo appeared on the jacket of his debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, in 1948. I graduated from the University of Texas that spring and then ended up in Manhattan, embarking on my own "wannabe" claw to the top, watching celebrities from afar, and scheming to meet--or be like--them.
