AUSTRALIAN Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has released a study into a new rail alignment across the Liverpool Range in northwest New South Wales. The study identified six alignment options, including a new, longer tunnel to replace the existing Ardglen tunnel, which has steep gradients on the approaches to both portals.
The options range in capital cost from $A 167 million to $A 465 million, and an operational saving for coal trains from $A 0.37 per tonne to $A 1.18 per tonne. ARTC is seeking feedback from the coal industry on its study as the realignment work is dependent upon future growth in the Gunnedah Basin coalfields.
