Elie Halevy (1870-1937) is not only hailed for his contributions to the history of utilitarianism or to the history of modern democracy in England, but he is also generally depicted as a great liberal thinker. French commentators, from Raymond Aron to Nicolas Baverez, have noted the Montesquieu-Tocqueville-Halevy intellectual tradition.
