Movie's $41 million debut makes it leader of the pack
Walt Disney Co.'s "The Lion King" roared its way to the top of the box office in its first full week of release June 25, leaving many in the industry hoping the beastly hit will carry the rest of the summer movie season beyond last year's record box office performance.
Disney's fourth animated hit in as many releases, "The Lion King" raked in nearly $41 million the June 25 weekend, and analysts expect it to do just as well over the all-important July 4th weekend.
"'The Lion King' was incredible," said Dave Davis, motion picture analysis for the media research firm Paul Kagan Associates Inc.
