As Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2003, it is fascinating to reflect on the changes that have developed--changes in the health care landscape as well as the landscape of a tract of land in East Dallas. Baylor grew from the 25-bed Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium in 1903 (rebuilt in 1909 with 364 beds, Figure 1) to BUMC, the flagship of Baylor Health Care System (BHCS) (Figure 2). As of fiscal year 2001, BHCS had 74,195 admissions, 11,455 babies born, 227,581 emergency department visits, 444,581 outpatient visits, and 1906 licensed beds and provided $133 million in community benefit.
