Mar. 30--Tamaqua's South Ward, a hillside, working-class neighborhood of mostly older homes, two schools and a community college campus, will get $400,000 to build a community center and make residential renovations as part of a state program to strengthen older residential areas near downtowns.
State and local officials announced South Ward's inclusion in the state's Elm Street program at a ceremony Thursday at the neighborhood playground.
The grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development includes $250,000 for the projects and $150,000 to cover costs of running the program.
