Mar. 30--An Iraqi college honors student, failing to understand directives spoken in English, is cut down at a U.S. checkpoint. His wailing father pleads for an American to kill him, too. "What we like to think of as Iraq's future," Army Staff Sergeant Jack Lewis cynically writes of the young man's death. Lewis' account, entitled "Roadwork," is one 11 by soldiers on the horrors of war and its wrenching emotional and moral complexities in "Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience."
