This strange, expensive book is presented as a scholarly study; but, like many other surveys of Chinese music history that have appeared over the past hundred years, it is strictly an amateur compilation; and it is riddled with so many errors and suspect generalizations that no statement in it can be taken at face value. It is rather hard to discern the point of this publication, except as an expression of the author's love for the subject. She would have been better advised to choose a narrower topic: but then to deal with it adequately she would have had to develop a more critical sense for history and the handling of historical evidence.
