The physicist Werner Meyer-Eppler (1913-1960) founded, together with the composers Herbert Eimert and Robert Beyer, the electronic music studio at the Cologne radio (at that time called the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk--NWDR, later simply WDR) in 1951. Some early histories place Meyer-Eppler at the head of the three (see, e.g., Lowell Cross's "Electronic Music, 1948-1953," Perspectives of New Music 7, no. 1 [Fall-Winter 1968]: 32-65), and if more recent accounts have minimized or even overlooked this contribution, Wie die elektronische Musik "erfunden" wurde should reestablish his importance.
