The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the oldest and most storied franchises in American sports history, but their 2006 World Series victory over the Detroit Tigers drew more comparisons to the likes of the Florida Marlins than, say, the New York Yankees.
With an 83-78 record, St. Louis would have finished fourth in the American League East, a distant 13 1/2 games behind the Yankees, but was fortunate to be part of the mediocre National League Central, where only two teams finished over .500.
