George Race (Figure 1) was born in Everman, Texas, on March 2, 1926. He grew up in a 2-room house with running water but without plumbing and usually without a father. He graduated from high school in 1942. After a year at Texas Wesleyan College and a second year at Baylor University, he had acquired enough premedical credits to enter medical school at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he graduated in June 1947 at age 21. He was allowed to complete medical school in 36 consecutive months because the USA wanted to avoid a physician shortage during the war.
