"This book is dedicated to the memory of Michael Wade who died, an exile from South Africa, in Jerusalem, September 1990." This statement poignantly reminds us from the outset not only of South Africa's many exiles but of the recent changes in their circumstances as South Africa's have changed. Over a year ago I heard Lewis Nkosi speak of his return visit to South Africa, and Breyten Bretenbach has published a memoir recording his return in 1991.
