Apr. 2--VIRGINIA BEACH -- A salesman stood over trays of fish-shaped nuggets and called out: "Zero trans fat!" Across the aisle, a vendor gave away bottles of peach-flavored water -- "everything but the flesh and the pit!" And down the row, Kraft representatives demonstrated a new vending machine -- correction, an "automated diner" -- that serves a hot Tombstone pizza or Kraft grilled cheese sandwich in about 90 seconds. The vendors in this hall at the Convention Center were pitching their newest products to school cafeteria managers and their bosses after the School Nutrition Association of Virginia's annual conference.
