Health and beauty aids departments experienced decelerated sales growth during the first quarter of 1994 in drug stores. First quarter dollar sales advanced 1.5%. This compares with a 4.4% increase in the fourth quarter of 1993 and a 5.8% gain in the third quarter of 1993. On an annualized basis dollar sales rose 3.7%, exactly on par with last year's gain.
Growth in unit sales has been tough to realize in recent quarters. The first quarter of 1994 produced a unit decline of 2.2%. This quarter's sluggish trend as well as that of the second and fourth quarters of 1993 resulted in annualized unit growth registering a decline of 0.2% for the 12 months through March ...
