POVERTY DECLINES TO 21.8 PER CENT

April 1 (PTI Economic Service): The rapid economic growth that India is witnessing, since the launch of the economic liberalisation programme in 1991, has helped the country in reducing the incidence of poverty to 21.8 per cent in 2004-05 from 26.1 per cent in 1999-00. The 61st round of National Sample Survey (NSS) released by the Planning Commission recently revealed that estimates of poverty based on Mixed Recall Period (MRP) methodology is down to 21.8 per cent.
