In 2006, tobacco exports rose 8% to just over $370 million. Cuba exported 73% of its cigars by volume, with those sales accounting for 83% of total production value.
Of that total, Western Europe purchased 61% of all cigar exports, followed by the Americas (12%), the Middle East (9%), Asia (8%) and Africa and the rest of the world (10%).
In the Mideast, sales were up by 34%, with growing demand in Israel, Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia; demand was also very strong in Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa.
