Men who consume more iron from meat may have a higher risk of gallstones than men who consume less.
Researchers tracked more than 45,000 men from 1986 to 2002. Those who got the most heme iron--the kind that's found in meat, poultry, and seafood--had a 20 percent higher risk of gallstones than those who got the least. Iron from other foods or from supplements--called non-heme iron--had no impact on gallstone risk.
