The Northeast states this year could reframe the heated debate in Washington regarding intercity rail passenger service by proposing a wholly new governance model for the Northeast Corridor (NEC) that redefines Amtrak's role. New Congressional leaders have pledged that reauthorization for intercity rail, after a decade of stalemate, is high on their list of anticipated accomplishments. Swift Senate passage of the Lautenberg-Lott bill (S.294), designed to inject financial stability into Amtrak's operations, is likely.
