When local developer Aldar Properties launched its Yas Island development last December it was clear that the emirate had an ace up its sleeve. The centrepiece of the $40,000 million project was a motor racing circuit. Although the developers confirmed it would meet international standards, they remained noncommittal about the prospect of hosting Formula One.

Formula One has been a hot topic in the lower Gulf over the past three years. In 2004, Formula One visited the Middle East for the first time with the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix and since then there has been speculation over whether Dubai with its autodrome would host the Gulf's second Formula One event.
