Abstract: Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carriere) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) in primaryMichigan forests depend on decaying wood for seedling-establishment sites, but seedling densities vary across wood species (hemlock, yellow birch, and sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.)).
