The Fifth (biennial) North American Forest Ecology Workshop was held in Aylmer, Quebec in June 2005, the first time it has been held in Canada. The central workshop theme of Managing the matrix while conserving the pieces highlights one of the underlying challenges of forest landscape management in North America today. From the oldest government-controlled forests to the most remote areas of the boreal forest, humans are increasingly present and actively managing a complex matrix of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and increasingly expected to do so in a manner that maintains key attributes and as much of the natural character of these complex systems as possible. ...
