A collective sigh of relief exited Howe Field on Friday after the Oregon softball team escaped from a potentially disastrous start to the Pac-10 schedule.
Jenn Salling hit a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Blair Williamson to provide 13th-ranked Oregon its first conference-opening victory in three seasons, 4-3 against California.
Williamson pinch hit for catcher Amie Morris to lead off the seventh and drew a full-count walk, not taking a swing in her at-bat.
