Apr. 5--The city of Coconut Creek has formally opposed the Seminole Tribe's push to gain sovereignty over 44 acres surrounding its casino there -- land being eyed for the state's largest gambling-hotel complex.
City officials said they had no choice but to file an objection with the federal government Wednesday. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs didn't give them enough time to work out potential concerns with the Seminoles over such a massive development, according to the federal filing submitted by the city.
