Apr. 5--Paul E. Erickson, bishop of the Illinois Synod of the Lutheran Church in America during the merger of three Lutheran denominations in the 1980s, died Tuesday, April 3, at a Downstate nursing home in Savoy, his daughter said. Rev. Erickson, 85, had undergone surgery after breaking his leg about a month ago and never recovered, said his daughter, Carol Erickson Shafis. After pastorates at two churches, Rev. Erickson was named assistant to the president of the church's Illinois synod in 1971. In 1975, he was elected bishop of the synod for the first of three, four-year terms before his retirement in 1987.
