Apr. 4--James River Cellars, a small winery near Ashland, used to personally deliver its Montpelier Blush, Hanover White and other wines to retailers.
But when Virginia wineries lost the right to self-distribute last July 1, James River beefed up its advertising and held more events on site to attract customers rather than pay a wholesaler to distribute its wines.
Now manager Mitzi Batterson is looking forward to calling the stores that used to carry James River's wines and arranging deliveries thanks to new legislation that's expected to be signed by Gov. Tim Kaine and approved today by the General Assembly.
