Solemnity marks Holy Saturday, the holiest night in the liturgical calendar, being the day Christ was laid in a tomb lent by His friend, Joseph of Arimathea.
Among His Apostles, it was a period of great uncertainty of what tomorrow might bring as they awaited Jesus' return in glory.
Today's celebration brings to a close the long season of Lent and penance, and the beginning of the Easter Vigil rites, between sunset and sunrise of Easter Sunday, considered the greatest and most significant liturgy of the ecclesiastical year.
