So it was that we set off in a 4x4 across the arid wasteland that is greater Johannesburg.
OUR decision to take a summer holiday in South Africa perplexed our perma-tanned friends. 'You must be mad, it's winter there,' they said. They had a point. For most Britons, South Africa is seen as a winter sun destination (our winter, their summer) - somewhere to savour Christmas lunch on the beach.
But if you have school-age children, going there in winter means Christmas or Easter - virtually unaffordable for someone with a mortgage - which is why we thought we'd visit when no one else wanted to.
