This essay is adapted from the keynote lecture at Thinking in Dark Times, A Conference in Honor of Hannah Arendt on the 100th Anniversary of Her Birth, sponsored by Bard College in October 2006.
I begin with a historical reference. Fifty years ago, in October of 1956, the two Cold War colossi were both simultaneously convulsed by the uprising in Budapest and its repression by Soviet tanks and by the final act of British and French imperialism in the Middle East, their collusion with the state of Israel in the invasion of Suez.
