Apr. 10--After opening with an impressive 5:46 for the first mile, Rick Platt of Williamsburg thought he might "crash and burn" in the Monument Avenue 10-kilometer race in Richmond on March 31.

It didn't happen. Platt, 56, never faltered as he smashed the state 55-59 age-group record for the 10K with a time of 35 minutes, 31 seconds. He finished 27th overall and as the second Master (age 40-and-over) among a field of 20,500 runners that completed the 6.2-mile race.

Platt's time led to more celebrating. He later was informed that it ranked No. 5 on the all-time U.S. list for 10K runners in his age group and left him in a tie ...
