Green chemistry: evidence suggests broad appeal and notable success in academic and industrial labs--Part 1.(Special Feature)

Now that the daunting data on environmental perils are regarded more as a call to action than an inconvenience, a plethora of green chemistry initiatives is gathering momentum across academia and the industrial world.

A number of efforts to implement green chemistry practices predate the passage of the Pollution Prevention Act, but this 1990 act and a formal shift in emphasis by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1991 have served to galvanize broad efforts to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances in laboratories and manufacturing processes.
