The world's largest "summer-only" hotel is the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, a Michigan getaway where no cars are allowed, only horses and bicycles.
Opened in 1887, the Grand Hotel seems larger than the White House as one climbs to the 660-foot columned porch where white rocking chairs overlook blue, choppy water and a sea of red geraniums (5,200) by midsummer. The last time I dined at the Grand Hotel, tourists were being charged to step foot on this famous porch because curious lookers were outnumbering and inconveniencing paying guests.
