A TRANSATLANTIC air fares war will break out today when a new budget airline announces flights to New York from as little as [pounds sterling]129.

The low-fares airline Zoom will operate daily flights from Gatwick to New York JFK from June 21. It promises to operate an easyJet-style booking service with flexible one-way fares which are a third of the price of its rival carriers.

The New York flights will offer designated seating and a meals service.
