SACRAMENTO -- The possibility that food from cloned animals could soon end up on supermarket shelves has sparked a growing controversy in California over safety and whether special labeling should be required.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not formally approved the use of cloned animals for food, it issued a preliminary opinion last December indicating it is safe to eat.

And that has consumer groups and state lawmakers scrambling to place new regulations on food created from cloning or genetic engineering.
